Rational use and alternative sources of water

Water is an essential element that contributes to promoting development and quality of life, but it is a finite and vulnerable resource that must be used rationally. The use of alternative sources and strategies for the rational use of water in buildings is a way to alleviate problems with the availability of drinking water and reduce its demand. These strategies include the use of rainwater, the reuse of gray water and the installation of water-saving components.

The use of rainwater is an ancient practice, used all over the world. This technique has become widespread and consolidated as a way to mitigate the various environmental problems caused by the increase in water demand, the lack of pollution control measures and environmental management in urban and rural areas.

Gray water reuse consists of the reuse, after adequate treatment, of gray water composed of effluents from tanks, bathtubs, showers, sinks and washing machines. The use of treated greywater for non-potable purposes is a promising alternative that should be developed and encouraged.

Water-saving components, also known as water-saving equipment or devices, aim to contribute to reducing water consumption. Some are independent of user action or changes in behavior, while others facilitate a reduction in consumption, but all of these components must maintain user comfort and the health safety of the facilities. The main energy-saving components are aerators, sprayers and extenders, used in taps. In showers, flow regulators are used and in toilets, flush valves with selective activation are used.

Furthermore, the development of these strategies to reduce water consumption in buildings is linked to the characterization of the end uses of water. Based on this knowledge, it is possible to evaluate the main components responsible for water use and prioritize the development of technologies to generate greater effective savings.

It is in this context that LabEEE has developed studies and research regarding the rational use and alternative sources of water, encouraging the reduction of water consumption, conservation of water resources and sustainability in buildings.
