6 Cities Project

Project coordinated by PROCEL/ELETROBRÁS, with the main objective of implementing reforms to improve energy efficiency in 2 public and commercial buildings in 6 Brazilian cities: Florianópolis, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador and Brasília.

The buildings were selected following criteria for determining the energy conservation potential and fleaping the results, respecting the interests of the building owners. One of the project's objectives is to establish the State of the Art in energy efficiency in buildings.

As a tool for analyzing retrofit alternatives (reforms aimed at improving the building's energy efficiency), the VisualDOE computer simulation software was used.

The stages of the 6 Cidades Project involve:

  1. Prior analysis of the energy consumption of buildings
  2. Technical visit to collect data and identify the main final uses of energy
  3. Modeling and calibration of selected buildings in simulation software
  4. Elaboration of preliminary retrofit projects
  5. Simulation of retrofit alternatives
  6. Economic analysis of each alternative
  7. Implementation of reforms
  8. Post-retrofit follow-up.

In Florianópolis, the Headquarter buildings of TELESC (Telecommunications of Santa Catarina) and Headquarters of FIESC (Federations of Industries of the State of Santa Catarina) were studied.

TELESC Headquarters Building

The TELESC Headquarters Building was inaugurated in 1976 and has a constructed area of 10,300 m², with an annual consumption of 313 kWh/m². The installed power in lighting is 23.0 W/m². The air conditioning system has a chilled water plant with a capacity of 240 TR. The proposed reforms to the lighting and air conditioning systems and the implementation of an automation system would result in a 39.1% reduction in the building's total electricity consumption. A report was presented for the TELESC Headquarters Building listing the potential for reducing energy consumption and the possible measures to do so. The elaboration of the reform projects awaits the decision of the owners of the building.

FIESC Headquarters Building

The FIESC Headquarters Building was inaugurated in 1983 and has a constructed area of 10,900 m², with an annual consumption of 103 kWh/m². The installed power in lighting is 16.4 W/m². The air conditioning system has a chilled water plant with a capacity of 400 TR. The proposals for reforming the lighting and air conditioning systems, including the reformulation of the electrical installations and the implementation of an automation system, would amount to a 40.3% reduction in the building's total electricity consumption. The renovation project was completed and its implementation depends only on the availability of funds from its owners.
